The invitational doubles pitted Matt Abbatiello and Dwayne Sampson versus Steve Nuding and Alvaro Rebaza. The game started off nip and tuck until Matt and Dwayne took a commanding 20-7 lead. Abbattiello’s and Sampson’s drives and killshots proved too much as they prevailed 25-14.

In the mens doubles both teams advanced to the finals without much trouble. The stage was now set for the former champs against the current ones. This time the former national champions, Castro and Polanco, outscored the current national champions, Roberts and Sostre, 25-15. The champions split $500, runners-up $250 and semi-finalists $125.
The tournament generated approximately 10 new USHA members and 20 renewals. Thanks to Moshit Paskal and Max Rivkin for helping make the HES available for this event, to the ICHA for donating the hospitality and to Artie Fuchs for running things smoothly.
Gary Cruz was on site with copies of the application for the USHA One-wall National Masters Invitational.

Hey Albert. Do you have an idea of what the divisions might be?

Usually Artie 718-332-4251 or bonartie@aol.com runs an Invitational Doubles in the morning. Since we just had the mens singles in October I’d expect to have a mens doubles, a womens doubles and possibly a womens singles (to make up for the womens singles that needed to be rescheduled from the Oct tournament). IF possible I’d like to add other divisions. I guess I’ll wait to hear Stan and Victor’s suggestions on that. I hope to get them to run the matches in the afternoon. I’ll also need to hear from Kevin Ward. He runs a junior program at the HES and has told me that he has about 22 kids. It would be extremely difficult not to have a division that included these kids. Unless, of course, they weren’t interested in playing. Any suggestions?

I think we should have a junior division. 17-under Singles would be a good idea. I think if we include the 17-under Singles, the tournament would emulate the Ymca One-Wall National (which included both open and junior divisions). I also believe that Open Singles should be included too; not just Open doubles.

Court time is limited at the HES. We only have the courts until 6PM on Sunday. This is why the mens and womens open singles are held around Oct/Nov and the mens and womens open doubles are held around March. Stan Z. plans on holding another tournament at the Kingsbay Y, in Sheepshead bay, during Feb..

The tournament was well run and well attended. Thanks to Artie and Albert for running a first class event and to all the players and spectators for participating.
