Competition pays off for McGrath At just 14, Coleman McGrath and Luis Bustos are already among the better players in their home clubs. Leading up to the event, Coleman found some stiff competition back home while Luis tapered his training before the trip. At Lattof, McGrath had two tough matches while Bustos coasted in the final. “He (Coleman) has been playing with the best guys back home,” said his Tom. Meanwhile, Coach Carl Rice said Bustos wasn’t ready for the determined McGrath. Coleman credited his use of the court for his placement and control for his win. Photographer Keith Thode was most impressed with Coleman’s lefthanded pass to the right side of the court that had reverse spin on it. Coleman smiled when Keith told him that and nodded. “Yeah, that works good.” While everything worked for Coleman in the singles, Bustos was asked what he’d do differently in the doubles. His answer: “Hit the ball.”

Boys’ 13-and-under: “We’ve got a great setup at Silver Lake Country Club,” said James Cooke, father of Most-Improved Patrick Cooke, who dominated the 13-and-under field. “We can bring the kids in and just pay for the court time.” Patrick put his court time to best use by playing with his friends and taking on the adults at the club whenever he could. In the final, Cooke handled Jon Gutierrez of Englewood (Denver suburb) with surprising ease considering Jon would have been another good choice for most improved, 1, 2. Since last year, Patrick concentrated on working on his back-wall shot to bring his game up to championship caliber. In the final, he focused on one thing: serving to Jon’s left. “I just kept it over on the left,” Patrick said. The same focus Patrick had on his backwall game paid off on his serves, never letting Gutierrez unleash his offensive skills with his right hand. Local Devin Peters won the A singles over another Lattof player Sam Ure. Esteban Camacho of Tucson took the B over Joe Coman of South Bend in a tiebreaker.
