HOUSTON-Jennifer Schmitt took control at the end of both games in the final of the Women’s Classic at the Downtown Houston YMCA on Sunday. Schmitt beat Collegiate Champ Aimee Ulbert, 17, 10 by scoring in bunches late in the games. “I couldn’t lay into my shots, so I just concentrated on getting the ball back,” Schmitt said.
Jennifer Hinman hobbled through the third-place playoff with just enough to defeat Maria Dugas, 18, 18. “I’m beat up,” she said afterward. Everyone was a little beat up on Sunday with the women’s classic format of multiple dropdowns. Even 14-year-old Brittyn Bidegain was too sore for a practice game after the matches on Sunday. This event was a revelation for Brittyn who advanced to seventh place.
David Chapman won the Houston Men’s Open events, defeating Tyler Hamel in both. The singles went to the breaker but Chapman and John Egbert beat Hamel and Gerry Garcia in two.
Chuck Reeve added to his weekend laurels by winning the 50 singles over Pete Bidegain after receiving the Kendler Award at the Saturday night banquet.
