satishovercesar BROOKLYN - “It’s been a long year,” Satish Jagnandan said after regaining his singles crown with a convincing win over Cesar Sala (pictured, struggling to return a Jagnandan blast in the final).

“I’ve had nightmares all year,” Satish said of his wait to regain the title. “It’s one thing to be on top and No. 1 but if feels special to regain it,” Jagnandan finished after calling his dad to give him the good news.

Sala could only say Satish deserved it. “He (Satish) plays, trains and works harder than the rest of us.”

The Women’s doubles had a lot more excitement with two full service innings after tying the score at 10-10 in the tiebreaker.  Tracy Davis earned a rare slam this year, teaming with Theresa McCourt to defeat Danielle Daskalakis and Brenda Pares-DuBose by one point.

Davis wasn’t the only player to win singles as doubles as Joe Agosto added two more Masters titles to his Grand Masters status in winning the 60 singles and doubles and Tony Grimm moved to the Bs in grand fashion, winning the C singles and doubles.

billshootsThe 2009 USHA One-Wall Championships

It was another beautiful day in New York with great handball action on the boardwalk in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn.   Cesar Sala (shown holding off Billy O'Donnell in the semis), and Satish Jagnandan will square off on Sunday in the men’s final for the fourth consecutive year and Tracy Davis and Theresa McCourt met for the fifth consecutive time today for the women’s title.

These are the makings of rivalries for the ages and Davis defended her singles for the second consecutive year today and will have a chance to slam with McCourt in the doubles on Sunday.

Joe Durso, 54, is back in the Open finals, this time teaming with teenager Tyree Bastidas to face PeeWee Castro and Willie Polanco, the defending champs.

Thursday's Reportnganddori

The 2009 USHA One-Wall Championships

Thanks to the HES and the three indoor courts there and the cooperation of the players, almost all of the matches were completed on Thursday, the busiest day of play.  Play stopped on the outdoor courts for more than three hours and Artie Fuchs took a number of matches to the HES.

All of the Open play took place outside and the singles play moved to the quarterfinals with most of the top seeds advancing.  The No. 3 seeds went down in both the men’s (Schneider over Polanco) and women’s (Ng over Ten in photo) fields and tomorrow’s action should be fierce.
