Women's Classic and Long Island Open Final Results
SYOSSET, N.Y. - Gilmore Takes Classic, Peixoto Slams in Long Island Pro Event
Lisa Gilmore used a
Z-serve to control Anna Christoff in two games for the women’s classic
title and Emmett Peixoto didn’t lose a game en route to the singles and
doubles titles over the weekend.
Building a huge lead with her z-serve to the right in the first game,
Gilmore seemed in control at 18-9 before Christoff made a run. Gilmore
finally stopped Christoff at 20-20 with a timeout, regained the serve
and called another timeout before closing out the first game. Gilmore
never let up in the second game, handling the very tough three-walled
glass court at Sportime far better than Christoff. “I didn’t use
anything but the z-serve to the right the whole match,” Lisa said of
her opponent’s struggles on the glass.
Emmett Peixoto was on top of his game on Sunday, turning back both Allan Garner and Luis Moreno in two games and then winning the doubles with David Chapman as his partner over Danny Bell and Cesar Sala, also in two games. It was a great day of final playoffs in all the women’s events and the very competitive Long Island Open events, including numerous tiebreakers. Friday's Report: The top seeds were making their way through the Women’s and Men’s events at Sportime in Syosset on Friday. Both fields are down to the final 8 with some great matchups set for Saturday morning. Theresa McCourt (hitting in the photo), one of New York’s finest, edged Jennifer Hinman in one of the best matches of the day, as would be expected when they were seeded 8 and 9. Irish representative Ashley Prendiville had a great showing on the three-walled glass exhibition court, upsetting No. 7 seed Tracy Davis in a great two-game match. On the men’s side, Danny Bell, 47 (setting to hit in bottom photo), still had too many shots and too much court savvy for 18-year-old phenom Tyree Bastidas in the Open. Dave Chapman, Emmett Peixoto, Allan Garner and dannyandtyreethe rest of the seeds held up to square off on Saturday in the quarters. Friday's results are below. Saturday’s a big day in New York as the banquet will honor Paul Williams with the USHA’s second-highest honor, The R.W. Kendler Award and Vince Gabriele will receive the annual Long Island Open’s Ken Ginty Award. Results through Friday: First Round: Anna Christoff (St. Paul) bye; Kayla Jones (Texas A&M) d. The big names had byes and a couple of late arrivals will start on Friday but the ladies who did play were moving forward or down in the triple-dropdown format. Everyone gets to play at least three matches and this is the big opportunity for the women to get together and play a lot of handball. Coupled with ICHA Long Island Open, which has grown to include a WPH men’s rpo singles, there will be a lot of action on the men’s side as well. The Lake Forest Girls made up a new game and of course it included juggling a handball. Kevin Kilgallen and Rosemary Bellini pulled off another major handball coup, raising the funds to offer travel money to all of the 54 entrants who lived far enough away to need a hotel room. “That’s how we grew this thing,” Kilgallen said. “We scoured the Handball Magazine for names of women who were competing and contacted them all with the offer to help them attend.” The personalized shirts were a big hit as each player had her name and home club on the back (Pictured: Kevin presents Daisy Tan with her shirt. Saturday’s banquet will honor Paul Williams with the USHA’s second-highest honor, The R.W. Kendler Award and Vince Gabriele will receive the annual Long Island Open’s Ken Ginty Award. kevin Thursday’s Results (Some matches to be played on Friday): First Round: Anna Christoff (St. Paul) bye; Kayla Jones (Texas A&M) d. Experience won out in the Women’s Classic as Sunday’s final will feature a fresh Anna Christoff vs. a weary but veteran Lisa Gilmore. Christoff made quick work of a tired Jennifer Schmitt while Gilmore rallied to force a tiebreaker and then built a 9-0 lead before closing out current national champ Megan Mehilos.
On the men’s side Allan Garner made his back-wall shots, especially with his left to beat David Chapman, reversing a final’s loss from two weeks ago in St. Joseph, Mo. Luis Moreno rallied to defeat David Fink in a tiebreaker and will face Sean Lenning on Sunday. Garner will square off against top-seeded Emmett Peixoto in his semifinal.

The
2009 USHA Women’s Classic got underway today with most of the 54
entrants competing. The big names had byes and a couple of late
arrivals will start on Friday but the ladies who did play were moving
forward or down in the triple-dropdown format. Everyone gets to play
at least three matches and this is the big opportunity for the women to
get together and play a lot of handball. The Lake Forest Girls made up a new game and of course it included juggling a handball. Kevin
Kilgallen and Rosemary Bellini pulled off another major handball coup,
raising the funds to offer travel money to all of the 54 entrants who
lived far enough away to need a hotel room. “That’s how we grew this
thing,” Kilgallen said. “We scoured the Handball Magazine for names of
women who were competing and contacted them all with the offer to help
them attend.”The personalized shirts were a big hit as each player had her name and home club on the back (Pictured: Kevin presents Daisy Tan with her shirt. Saturday’s banquet will honor Paul Williams with the USHA’s second-highest honor, The R.W. Kendler Award and Vince Gabriele will receive the annual Long Island Open’s Ken Ginty Award.
