VANCOUVER, Wash. - Tyree Bastidas came within one win of being the first junior player to slam in all three junior events in one year. Bastidas did match fellow New Yorker Eric Klarman's record of winning the 1, 3, and 4-wall juniors singles titles in the same year. Leading to this event, Bastidas had slammed in the 1-wall and 3-wall juniors; however, Victor Perez and Nikolai Nahorniak defeated Bastidas and John Audet in the Boy's 19-Under final, 21-15, 21-15. In the Boy's 17-Under Doubles, CJ Laffey and Eric Matiasek pulled out a thrilling win over Caolan Daly and Killian Carroll, 21-12, 7-21, 11-10. Anthony Collado helped Alejandro Serrano slam in the Boy's 13-Under. The Northern Cal duo defeated Santa Barbara newcomers Efran Sanchez and Jacob Rodriguez, 21-5, 21-15. Daniel Curry captured the Junior's 11-Under title with an intense win over Coleman McGrath, 21-18, 21-10. With a large crowd gathered, the tournament's youngest finalists duked it out for two solid games, hitting and returning the ball exceptionally well for the 11-Under group. Monday Many of the day's matches stretched to tiebreakers as players battled for titles. In the Boy's 17-Under Singles final, Gary McConnell made a valiant effort to force a third game against Coalan Daly before falling 11-5 in the tiebreaker. The Tom Lynch Newcomer of the Year Award winner Killian Carrol defeated Most Improved Award winner Keith Kavanagh for the Boy's 15-Under title, 21-15, 21-20. Alejandro Serrano won the Boy's 13-Under over Tyler Stoffel, 21-12, 21-5. During the evening's banquet, USHA Commisioner Don Quinlan announced the King of the Court Short Court winners and presented the year's annual awards. Evan Brown earned the Vince Gabriele Sportsmanship Award.
Sunday Forced to a quarterfinal tiebreaker and playing in his final 4-Wall Junior tournament, Sam Kass dug deep and pulled away from Diamaid Nash, 10-21, 21-19, 11-3. The win earned Kass a semifinal match with juniors partner Evan Brown. Nikolai Nahorniak and Tyree Bastidas will meet in the opposite semifinal of the Boy's 19-Under Singles. Alejandro Serrano and Tyler Stoffel will face-off in tomorrow's Boy's 13-Under final. The "King of the Court" two-bounce competition began as juniors filled the courts for this popular event.
Saturday
One of the regions worst snow storms in the last two decades couldn't keep the players away from the starting play at the Club Green Meadows. The only tournament forfeit due to flight cancellation was the Boy's 19-Under top-seed, Ricardo Ruiz. The only other division shake-up took place when Loren Collado upset the number one seed, Brant Bidegain in the Boy's 15-Under in two games, 21-6, 21-18. Brian & Bonnie Poffenroth and Jan Wisniewski kept matches rolling the entire day.
