raya
Greg Raya sets up for a back wall shot against Bruce Handelman in the 60 Singles.  Raya won in two games.

HOUSTON - Host Chuck Reeve played “the best since the Worlds,” in his winning the 55s over Vance McInnis in impressive fashion, 10, 14. Reeve’s win also kept McInnis at nine in his quest to become a grand master.

Greg Raya (in the photo) defeated Bruce Handelman for the second year in a row in the invite final in the 60s.

Harry Scott was on top of his game in the final over Jim Smith.

Chris Tico shot very well to handle powerful Chris Watkins in the seniors final.

Mike Panko claims to have played his last singles tournament but that would be a shame. Panko dominated the 40 singles, including a final win over Jay Miller.

Tracy Eubanks repeated in the 45 plus with a win over Mark Gilmer.

Danny Acosta earned the 50 title over Karl Stundins in another all-Texas final.

Ed Grossenbacher defeated his doubles partner Mike Driscoll for the 70-plus and newly-eligible Kevan Delgrande was too strong for last year’s 75 titlist Bill Strawn.

Allan Garner rallied for the singles title over Tyler Hamel and then slammed in the doubles with Adam Berliner as his partner.  Beth Rowley won the women’s over Maher Scholarship winner and fast-improving Sally Kenworthy.

Saturday's report:

Host Chuck Reeve (hitting in his win over Tim Murray) was one of the favorites to advance to Sunday’s final round but his hands will be full with Vance McInnis, who will be looking to earn his 10th Masters title and Grand Master status.

The most exciting match of the day had to be the 50 semifinal as Dan Acosta took a 6-1 lead over Lou Barberini in the tiebreaker only to fall behind 10-6.  Acosta rallied to win 11-10 and will give the hometown fans another local to cheer on Sunday.  Acosta will face Karl Stundins, who enjoyed the day off when Manuel Raymond defaulted.

Bruce Handelman was so happy he pulled out his match, he wanted to be sure Zoe got a “Hello” in the story.  Handelman escaped with an 11-9 tiebreaker and will face Greg Raya in the final on Sunday.

Newcomers dominated the 70s as Ed Grossenbacher and Mike Driscoll will square off on Sunday.

Allan Garner and Tyler Hamel will see a lot of each other on Sunday, facing off in the singles and doubles finals.

Friday Report

Friday Report

campbell

The Houston YMCA was buzzing with action all day on Friday as two rounds of play were completed in many Masters events.  “We wanted to keep the tournament shorter to give as many people a chance to play,” said tournament director Chuck Reeve.  There were plenty of great matches on the first day as all the masters events narrowed down to the semis.

Shown in the photo, Ed Campbell shoots in his win over Charlie Bokelman in the 55s, 21-14, 21-14.

Allan Garner and Tyler Hamel are the big guns in the Houston Invite but a field of 14 in the Open will be looking to interrupt their string of Texas event finals.
