| Bruce FaBrizio and Naty Alvarado present the $25,000 check to Paul Brady. |
Simple Green US Open, Los Caballeros, Fountain Valley, CA.
In a flurry, Paul Brady became the third champion to repeat at the Simple Green US Open. Trailing Sean Lenning 10-7 in the tiebreaker, Brady rallied for an 11-10 win to take the $25,000 first-place prize. “He (Lenning) keeps coming and I know we’ll have many more great matches in the future,” Brady said in the check presentation.
Lenning worked the right side on the serve throughout and he had his reverse cracking in the first game to take control early. Brady turned the tables in the second to win easy. Lenning held a lead throughout the tiebreaker, starting with a 4-0 lead and then led 9-4 on his short swing kills. Brady battled back to 9-7 before Lenning scored the 10th point. Brady never gave Lenning another clear opportunity to score the match point, keeping Lenning on the run and off balance the rest of the way to take the hard-earned win.
Anna Christoff repeated in the women’s with a final win over Jennifer Schmitt, taking charge early to win the first game and then rallying from 15-8 in the second for the repeat title.
And, Marcos Chavez and Vince Munoz were the class of the doubles field again, controlling Dane Szatkowski and Bill Mehilos in this year’s final, 10, 16. “Dane played great and had a couple of shots that just missed,” said Eddie Chapa of the closer second game. But the champs make a great team and will be tough to beat.

The seeding held true as Paul Brady held off Tony Healy to win the Irish battle and Sean Lenning rallied from 13-20 in the second to beat Naty Alvarado Jr. on Saturday. Thus, the top two seeds will meet on Sunday for the $25,000 first prize. “That’s $5,000 more than last year, just as Bruce said,” Naty Sr. said proudly of the increase. No doubt, the finalists will leave it all on the line on Sunday as it’s a $15,000 difference for second.
“I didn’t recognize Sean,” Kathy Lenning said of her son’s demonstrative exclamation after finishing off his second game comeback. “He’s usually so reserved – that’s a lot of emotion he put into that game.”
“I just wanted it really badly,” Sean said. “I kept my confidence and kept going for my shots,” he said of the late rally.
Brady had overpowered Healy in the first and found a tougher opponent in the second as Healy went ahead 17-15 before Brady closed the door. Thus, Sunday’s final will be a rematch of the US Nationals and we’ll see if Lenning has moved closer to the top of the world handball order.
Defending champ Anna Christoff advanced over Megan Mehilos and Jennifer Schmitt upset current national champ Lisa Fraser in two games. In a seesaw battle, Schmitt and Fraser both had big runs but Schmitt’s came at the end of both games, finishing both off with impressive displays of backwall shooting.
In the pro doubles, defending champs Vince Munoz and Marcos Chavez have also advanced to the final, defeating hard-hitting Dessie Keegan and Noel McHugh. Dane Szatkowski and Bill Mehilos knocked off veterans John Bike and Danny Bell in the bottom bracket, 20, 10.
The competition was just as furious as 186 amateurs narrowed their fields down to the finals in all events.
