Brooklyn Tech takes PSAL Team Title
In dramatic fashion number one seeded Brooklyn Tech defeated number 14 seeded Bronx Science ending their 'Cinderella' post season. The final match is best 3 out of 5 with two doubles and three singles events. Bronx Science jumped out to an early lead winning number 1 doubles. Both teams were nervous as well over 100 players and fans from both schools were in attendance. The atmosphere is similar to a championship tennis match as a lot of cheering and rooting is done between points and side outs but during the volleys all is quiet. Brooklyn Tech rebounded winning number 2 doubles but they soon found themselves down 2 games to 1 after Tony Chai defeated Albert Lee in number 3 singles. This set up the match of the day as number 2 singles did battle. Alvin Lee from Bronx Science and Jeffery Chen from Brooklyn Tech, both lefties, played even to 19. After Lee hit a set up wide and Chen took over the serve it was soon over as Chen aced a serve and scored the final point and forcing a tie-breaking match between number 1 singles. Aleksan Gavryushenko playing number 1 singles for Brooklyn Tech is as cool as they come holding his emotions and demeanor in reserve. Chris Lee playing number 1 singles for Bronx Science is jovial and outgoing on the court. Both players are skilled and early in the match the outcome was in doubt. However over time Gavryushenko's combination of power drives to the left and deep lobs to the left were too much for Lee and he closed it out 21-8. As Commissioner Lin Fernandez said "...it doesn't get any better than this!" by Gary Cruz |
