Luis Moreno started fast and raced to a 13-0 lead over Sean Lenning before the tide turned. It wasn’t a slow start by Lenning but a perfect half-game by Moreno. Rifling kills and aces, Moreno was unstoppable. Bringing out his power game, Lenning started to move Moreno around and reversed the trend but not in time for the first game. The more experienced Lenning managed 14 in the first and then took the next two games, 21-8, 11-4. That wasn’t the only final tiebreaker but it was the most entertaining as both players thrilled the fans with phenomenal gets and off-balance shots. Youth won out in the A singles as Raul Felix defeated Benny Young in two 21-19 games. Lenning rolled past Vern Roberts while Moreno needed three games to turn back the hustling Abraham Montijo. Benny Young earned his first win over Sam Ortega, claiming the third time was the charm, in the A semifinals. Benny will face a much younger opponent on Sunday, Raul Felix of Tucson. Omar Santa Ana sets up for a backwall shot in the Open semifinals against Luis Moreno. Pete Jorgensen was the recipient of this year’s Marty Decatur Sportsmanship Award. Pete’s known for causing many arguments on the court, as in “No, I couldn’t have got that,” and “Are you sure you don’t want a hinder?” Pete also helped at the tournament desk this year. |
