wells

Mike Wells sets in the final as Esser, Pfannenstiel and Stoffel move into position.  Locals Esser and Pfannenstiel edged Stoffel and Wells in three games for the 50-plus title.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The final day of play brought out the best in the Masters doubles.

Mike Panko and Tony Krocak held onto their 35-plus crown, but just barely.  Trailing 6-10 in the tiebreaker, Andy Schad ran off four unanswered points to tie the match at 10-10 in the third but Panko and Krocak regained the serve to win over Schad and Dan Zimet in a great match.

Chris Roberts earned his 10th Masters title and Grand Master status in the 45's.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - At the AC of Overland Park

It was a great day of handball for the masters players and fans in suburban Kansas City.  Quarterfinal matches produced numerous upsets, an 11-10 thriller and several tiebreakers.

Defending champs Rick Harrington and Robin Peters fell in the 55-plus while most of the other seeds held true.

Top seeds advanced in the masters doubles in almost all events, with the exception of the 55s.   No. 9 seeded Lary Bozzay and Gary Brake of St. Louis, proved the lone Cinderella team in this year’s field.

Everyone’s looking forward to the 35-plus final where Andy Schad and Dan Zimet will try to unseat the defending champs Mike Panko and Tony Krocak.  “I’ve heard Dan’s name and I knew he was a good three-waller but I didn’t know how tough he was in the front court,” said Matt McLaughlin after their semifinal.
