Start a Collegiate Handball Program
|
Often times the United States Handball Association can help new college handball programs start up with equipment donations and other support. Fill out this form to let us know you're interested in starting a program.
Dr. Mike Steele from Pacific University has created this checklist to help beginning programs get organized.
Pointers for Starting a College Program
-
Decide whether you want to offer handball as a class or as a club at your school.
-
If your school has physical education or health as a requirement to graduate or if your school is presently offering racquetball as a class then offering handball as a class may be the best choice. You will have to check with the curriculum department about how to get handball offered as a class. Sample class outlines are available at Class Outlines
-
If you elect to start handball as a club you must contact the recreation or intermural director to see what the requirments for starting a club are at your school. Usually there is a requirement of 1 to ??? students that are interested in participating.
-
Identify interested handball players and recruit them.
-
Find a coach or instructor for the program.
-
Find an advisor for the program. Generally they have to be staff or faculty but they don’t have to be a player, just someone to support the Handball Club.
-
Vote/Appoint the Student Club President, Vice President, and Treasurer. Check out an example of a Club's constitution
-
Complete all required college paperwork and be an official club. Contact your recreation director and/or student government for such paperwork.
-
Reserve courts for club play time.
-
Submit a budget to your school for funding of your program.Have Handball Club members join the USHA at the $10 discount price for students, include this cost in the club dues. See member benefits. The USHA offers a $21 special for new students. Contact Gary Cruz for more information.
-
Apply for grants; seek out fund raising opportunities and sponsorships.
-
Apply for USHA Starter Kit.
-
Participate in local tournaments and travel to the National Collegiate Championship.
-
Stay in contact with the USHA, pass along student information for tracking and retaining handball players.
-
Recruit, Recruit, Recruit!
