“This was the hardest one yet,” Satish Jagnandan said after defeating Cesar Sala for his third consecutive singles title. It was an emotional day as play moved indoors for the finals and Satish was overcome with emotions after the 11-0 tiebreaker.

“He’s pretty good,” Sala said with a wry smile acknowledging the huge understatement and proving himself more than a worthy opponent by winning the second game, 21-11.

Sala earned a title later in the day when he and Joe Kaplan came back from a first-game loss to edge PeeWee Castro and Willie Polanco in a tiebreaker.

All but the final three matches were played indoors at the HES, where play was limited to three courts but proved a godsend when the rain started at 5:30 a.m. and lasted until almost noon.

Theresa McCourt earned a slam in the Women’s open events, teaming with Tracy Davis to defeat Veronica Figueroa and Dana Everett in two games.

Jurell Bastidas reversed his earlier loss to Allan Sanchez to win the playoff in the A singles that was necessitated by a three-way tie for first.

Al Torres and Paul Williams turned in a dominating performance in the Masters doubles, defeating Dan Vera and Mike Angley in two games.

In the second round-robin to come down to a three-way tie for matches won, Joe Agosto earned a slam in the 50s with Rene Carabello as his partner. The difference: four more total points scored in a losing effort.

In an extremely close C doubles final, Fabrizio Alvarez and Chris Miranda dropped the first game 21-20, won the second 21-20 and rallied from a 9-2 deficit in the tiebreaker to edge John Roca and Kevin Ward Jr., 11-9.
