Bringing Handball into the Future
How do we ensure the legacy of handball? This is a question on a lot of players’ minds as they perceive a waning interest on the part of our nation’s youth. Our media-saturated culture offers a distraction for our young people at every click of the remote control or mouse. Video games, 300-channel satellite connections and the World Wide Web keep kids plastered to their chairs. Physical education budgets are dropping off the map.

How’s a seemingly simple game with just a ball and wall supposed to compete? To grow? What happens 20 years from now?

The answer may be simple: Handball could be the catalyst to solve many of our society's woes. Hardly any equipment is needed, the rules are simple and only two players are needed for a game. Balls and walls abound. Perhaps most important, the game exercises both sides of the brain, which has been shown to help students in the classroom. Handball also makes for better citizens as fair play is inherent and players are required to make calls against themselves.

Now, here's where you come in. If you’re like most who are hooked on the game, you want to share the great workouts, strategic play and fun times with others. And you want the legacy of the game to be passed on.

Today, and into the foreseeable future this is USHA’s main focus: Bringing in new blood and catalyzing a resurgence of interest in The Perfect Game. Our reinvigorated commitment is already reaping immediate benefits. We’ve added crucial pieces to our staff - Gary Cruz is cultivating youth programs and developing a strong handball presence across the country. This is exciting stuff.

But, to maximize our effectiveness we need your support in two ways:

  • Word of mouth – Spread the word. Tell people about the game, convey the depth of your appreciation and get your friends, relatives and acquaintances on the court.
  • Financial – Creating an effective nationwide campaign to get young people playing handball, to support coaches, youth program directors and kids, while maintaining our top notch service to each and every one of our valued members, requires capital assistance.
