Shorty Stands Tall in Vegas; Slams Small Ball Events
LAS VEGAS - The 2nd Annual WPH/WOR 3WallBall World Outdoor Championships wrapped up on Sunday in Las Vegas.
Women's and doubles action were the focus on Sunday. Tracy Davis and Sandy Ng (pictured left) battled it out in the women's open singles final. Davis won in a tiebreaker. Davis and Ng later teamed up to win the doubles division, defeating Jennifer Hinman and Ashley Moler.
In the big
ball division, it was an all-California final as Gilberto Rosales (Compton, CA) defeated Gabino Velazquez (Anaheim, CA), (12), 9, 7. No. 1 seed Samzon
Hernandez was upset in the semifinals by Rosales earlier on Saturday.
Braulio Ruiz continued his hot streak by winning the open doubles with Eddie Chapa. They defeated John Bike Jr. and Naty Alvarado Jr. in the final.
Sean Lenning and Brittyn Bidegain joined forces to win the pro mixed doubles event.
On Saturday night, after a two hour rain delay, the men's open singles small ball final was center stage. Braulio "Shorty" Ruiz (below) used his powerful serve and the lively crowd support to top Sean Lenning in two games, 14, 3.

The new 21 balls have arrived and have been put in play in both four-wall
and three-wall tournaments. The general consensus is that the balls play
true and similar to the Red and White Ace balls. For those of you who have
used them, you'll find it hard to believe but they do weigh the same as the
Red and White Ace balls. The difference is that the rubber is softer, thus
they feel lighter and easier on the hands.
The issues we've experienced have been early breakage, getting the balls
out of the cans and the ink coming off too soon.
The manufacturer has been working on making the balls last longer since we
first started getting feedback. The can and ink issues are just coming to
light and work has started on improving those as well. We (staff) have
been working with the manufacturer to keep balls in play while ordering
small quantities to speed up the improvement process.
Our first few shipments were planned to be small in number for several
reasons. The manufacturer needed to gear up, we wanted to be able to make
adjustments as information started coming back, and we wanted to keep a
steady stream of balls in the pipeline, especially to tournaments. For the
remainder of Sept., we are limiting sales to tournaments.
As most of you know, the previous manufacturer was unable to make a ball
that players wanted to use. Thus, we were forced to find a new supplier who
could make balls and would also work on making the perfect ball for the
perfect game. We believe we're on the right track.
Thanks for your continued support,
Vern Roberts, Executive Director
