2013 Coney Island Finalists Tyree and Jurell Bastidas.

BROOKLYN -  The official opening of the handball season began with an open small ball singles tournament at the famed Seaside Handball Courts in Coney Island hosted by Hall of Famer Albert Apuzzi.  While a few elite players were absent, a great meal is measured by the ingredients you put in not leave out.  Tyree Bastidas solidified his hold on the No. 1 ranking by defeating brother Jurell in the final, 25-18.

USHA Masters Singles

Masters Singles champs grind 'em out

gary_and_bobThe champs had to grind out the wins on Sunday as no one went down without a fight.  Carlos Chavez took the Seniors, Chris Watkins needed three games to turn back George Repine in the Masters.  John Bike held off Greg Tellez in the 45s and Mike Linnik earned his third straight by holding off Lloyd Garcia.  Vern Roberts stopped Marc Penick in the 55s and Glenn Carden served his way past Greg Sizemore.  Greg Raya turned back Alan Sherrill and Gary Rohrer (pictured) won his third consecutive tiebreaker to win the 70s over Bob Braine.  Ed Grossenbacher beat Mike Driscoll in three and Kevan DelGrande won the 80s. 

In the Open, older brother Bryar Bidegain beat Brant and Greg Gredvig won the B/C round robin. 

    There were a number of great matches on Saturday, including tiebreakers and 11-10 decisions.

Rocky Mountain Regionals

Hall of Fame & Rocky Mountain Regionals Wrap Up in Tucson


The Annual USHA Hall of Fame Tournament and Rocky Mountain Regionals wrapped up on Sunday. It was an exciting day of finals with many going tiebreaker. David Fink slammed the open events and will receive travel assistance to the USHA Four-Wall Nationals to represent the RM Region. Fink defeated Glenn Carden in the singles and teamed with Dave Vincent to win an exciting doubles match over Vern Roberts and Steve Natale, 18, (15), 4.

Dylan Key and Angel Marquez (left) had a back-and-forth battle for the A Contenders division. Key pulled out the win in the tiebreaker.

Thanks to our Tucson supporters, prize money for this year's Open events in the Hall of Fame & Rocky Mountain Regional Championships will be awarded to the Open finalists.

Additionally, travel money for the 63rd USHA Four-Wall Nationals will be awarded to the champion of the open divisions, payable upon playing in Des Moines.  If an Open champion cannot attend, travel money will be awarded to the following division singles champions in order of acceptance:  40, 50, 60, 70.
