Moreno Slams in Canada and More
The Canadian Nationals wrapped up on Sunday in Winnipeg, Canada. Luis Moreno (Tucson) slammed the open events, defeating Vic Perez (Los Angeles) in the singles final, 11, 10. He went on to win the doubles with partner Andy Nett. Lisa Fraser-Gilmore returned to the court to win the women's open singles, defeating Tracy Davis in the final. The LAAC Wafe Risner Tournament also wrapped up this weekend with Marcos Chavez defeating Brant Bidegain in the open singles final.
On the East Coast, it was a film fest that made the headlines. The handball documentary, "One-Wall, Kings of Coney Island" made its New York premiere at the Art of Brooklyn Film Fest on Saturday Night. The film follows top one-wall players in New York as they prepare for the USHA One-Wall Nationals. Albert Apuzzi, Cesar Sala, Willie Polanco among others featured in the film made it out to the red carpet event. The movie was well received and ended up winning the "Audience Choice Award." Brady Wins WPH Player's Championship in Seattle
Paul Brady barely qualified for the WPH Player's Championship and now he is the champion. Brady (ranked No. 7 out of 8 due to limited participation throughout the season) swept his pool play and then defeated Charles Shanks in the Saturday Night final to claim his first WPH Player's Championship title.
Brady kicked off the event on Friday with a dominating win over Sean Lenning, 15-2, 15-2. His work wasn't done for the day, as he had to face Luis Moreno that evening. Moreno pushed Brady to a tiebreaker but fell short. On Saturday, Brady defeated Andy Nett to complete his sweep of the pool play and advance to the final against Shanks, a rematch of the 2012 USHA Nationals and 2012 Simple Green US Open. Much like the two previous meetings, Brady was too much for Shanks, winning the title, 15-7, 15-7.
In numerous interviews throughout the weekend, Brady stated that he was using this highly competitive event to train and prep for the U.S. Nationals. See you in Des Moines, Paul!
In the Senior Race 4 Eight, Andy Schad defeated John Bike in a thrilling final, 25-20.
