Danielle Daskalakis (right) captured the Women's 21 & 23-Under Divisions.

BROOKLYN - Under very cold and windy but dry conditions play concluded in the Master/Challenger tournament at Coney Island.

In the 35+ division Karl Muchow never got a chance to get warm as Jason Morgan blasted his way to the title in two games. However, Danielle Daskalakis (pictured above with Samantha Feng) was on fire, completely dominating both the 23 and 21 and under divisions.

Scott Kelley reaches back for a pass shot and rallied from a first game loss to defeat Peter Service in the 50-plus final.

CHATTANOOGA - There was a frantic finish to the Lookouts baseball game on Saturday Night that ended 5-4 and was enjoyed by the handball players as part of the tournament banquet. That was just a preview to the final day of matches at the Sportsbarn.

Local Scott Kelley (pictured on the right) rallied from a first game loss to defeat Peter Service in a super 50-plus singles final.

Kendell Lewis did the same in the 35s, as he said his legs felt like concrete the first game before he rallied to defeat Chris Watkins in three.

In another Tennessee win, Jim Brickell rallied to defeat Mac Husband in a grueling three game final.

Alan Frank, Vance McInnis, Harry Scott, Norm Young, Kevan DelGrande and Nick Mattioni were able to eke out two games wins for their titles.

“It was a great group of people for a great weekend of play and activity,” said club owner David Brock.

2nd Annual Joe Amacio Memorial Tournament

BROOKLYN - This year's event was held at the H.E.S., the official back-up site to the USHA National 1-Wall Championships.  Thanks to Artie Fuchs, Jack Feldman, Juned Khan, Ron Florez, and others for all their help.  Also a "Thank You" to Adam Gittlitz for his donation which helped offset the cost of the hospitality.  See the write-up of the Men's 35+ Doubles by Artie Fuchs.

2009 HES Doubles Finalists
HES Men's Doubles Finalists:  Pee Wee Castro and Willie Polanco defeated Robert Sostre and Tony Roberts.

The Men's Pro Doubles final featured defending National One-wall doubles champions against former National champions, Tony Roberts and Robert Sostre.  Sostre played in his first USHA Ranked event since an injury sidelined him last year.   Brooklyn's Albert Apuzzi gives us details.

MENS PRO-DOUBLES – By Albert Apuzzi

In the semis PeeWee Castro and Willie Polanco jumped out to a 6 point lead.  The rest of the match was played about even, but Dave and Rookie were unable to close to gap and fell 25-16. On the lower half of the draw the kids, Saul Gonzalez and Luis Rodriguez, broke out to a 8-0 lead, but the cagey veterans, Tony Roberts and Robert Sostre, caught them at 12 and ultimately won the match 25-20.

In the final Roberts and Sostre jumped to an 11-6 lead.   Castro and Polanco caught up and raced ahead before Roberts and Sostre were able to close the gap at 19 all.  At that point it appeared that Sostre’s layoff caught up with him as he seemed to be fatigued.  Castro and Polanco were able to end the match without their opponents earning another point.

2009 HES 35+
HES 35+ Doubles Finalists:  Rene Carabello and Al Torres over Mike Grabowski and Matt Abbitiello
35 +INVITATIONAL DOUBLES - By Artie Fuchs

The final pitted Rene Caraballo and Al Torres versus Matt Abbtiello and Mike Grabowski. The lead changed hands early until Caraballo and Torres opened up a commanding 22-7 lead. Al's serve and Rene's steadiness proved to much as they went on to prevail 25-18.
