    Dear Handball Player,

The USHA & Court Shorts Staff wishes everyone a Wonderful  Thanksgiving!

By now you've awakened from your Turkey Coma, rolled (literally) out of bed and are jostling for position in lines among the rabid throngs at shopping centers this Friday.  Or you could be avoiding them all together...

Whatever you plan to do with your holiday weekend, the best thing is to put on your gloves and get back on the handball courts!  What better way to work off that Thanksgiving Dinner?

Members and families of Team USA are very thankful for their safety after a scary incident on the snowy roads in Italy this weekend.  Albert Apuzzi forwarded the following update from Dori Ten:

"My wife called me @ 10am & said that when they awoke this morning to leave on the trip to a vineyard, they discovered that there was 4 feet of snow.  That is a record for the last 20 years.
The bus was traveling downhill and wound up in a ditch.  The atmosphere changed from laughing and joking to chaos.

Theresa McCourt turned into RoboCop and got the people under control, then dug a path so that the people could exit the bus.

The bus is still in the ditch waiting for roadside assistance."

Fortunately, everyone escaped the incident without injury, and the bus' occupants were lucky enough to have one of "New York Finest" there to take control of the situation.

Team USA will be competing in the Federation Cup this weekend.  Will Team USA continue their dominance in international competition?  Read the latest press release for Italy's Federation Cup below and more in this week's Court Shorts.

Team USA to compete in Federation Cup
4-Wall JrTorino, Nizza Minferrato, Italy - Team USA leaves for Italy this Monday.

John "Rookie" Wright will be representing the Stars & Stripes as will doubles champs, Willie Polanco and Steve Robalino.  Third place finisher, Roland Brown III rounds out the men's team.

Theresa McCourt and Dori Ten will compete for the U.S. women's team.  All players are eagerly looking forward to representing the United States and the USHA in the Fed Cup to be held Nov. 28-30th.

    Federation Cup Press Release:

General Secretary Carlo Berrino and chairman Massimo Corsi have presented the prestigious program of the first edition of the 1-Wall Federation at the Ministry of Sports in Turin on  November the 19th. Not less than 12 federations have subscribed to the tournament that will be played on November 29-30 at the indoor courts of Nizza Monferrato and Piedmont. Eight of those federations have included a female team in their delegation.  All three major international handball federations, CIJB, FIPV and WHC, have representing teams competing at the 1-Wall Federation Cup.

Berrino was proud to announce the presence of some of the world s best athletes in the 1-wall handball game at the tournament. Amongst those are John "Rookie" Wright, the uncrowned king of big ball (USA), world champion William Polanco (USA) and manifold handball champion Paul Brady from Ireland.  Top-players from the Basque country, France and Belgium will try to break the hegemony of the traditional 1-wall countries.

The tournament will be played in a Davis Cup based style of competition: In the Men's tournament, the clashes between the federations will be 2 doubles matches, and if necessary a deciding singles match.  In the Women's tournament, the competition will be over 2 singles matches with a possible deciding doubles match.

More information can be found at the official website of the 1-Wall Federation Cup.

4-Wall JrNew handball classes at Gonzaga University are ROLLING!

Gonzaga University has started offering handball classes this year.  Thanks to Paul Buller, starter equipment from the USHA, and some student body interest, their program has gotten off the ground.  Mix in a recent exhibition match where Jake and Eric Plummer played Jay Balkenbush and Pete Svennungsen, and things are looking pretty good for the new collegiate program in Spokane, Washington.

Paul Buller writes, "It was a fun match, with Jake and Eric prevailing in two games. Jay was hurting from a leg injury and had to play the right side for most of the match.

The students enjoyed the high caliber of play and sportsmanship
It was also great to have the GU baseball team in the audience."

Gary Cruz, with the help of Joel Levy continues to bring handball into schools

After a brief visit to Seaside, CA in September a return was scheduled where Gary Cruz introduced handball to Donna Koenig's physical education classes.

Cruz returned on November 17th and instructed over 200 students the basics of handball.  Before he left, Cruz made sure the school was well equipped to continue their program, leaving them with eye guards and handballs courtesy of the USHA's Development Fund.

On November 3rd, Cruz conducted handball workshops and presentations for educators in White Plains, NY.  Forty educators attended who are interested in adding handball to their curriculum.  Two schools have already taken steps to start handball at their schools and have requested the starter equipment from the USHA.

In Jackson, MS, level 4 USHA Certified Instructor Joel Levy gathered the names of 24 educators that are interested in future
    in-service training opportunities.

Do you want to start a handball program in your area?  The USHA can help you!  Contact us about:  Instructional Materials, getting Certified to Teach Handball, and receiving Handball Equipment for your program.

Ref Corner:  You make the Call...
The Ref Corner is a weekly resource to help tune your ability to referee handball.  Feel free to submit questions on any form of handball and see the answer posted here. Now for the question:

    Last  week's question:
Jim Hartzell of Des Moines asks, "I see players wearing black gloves now and then, but referees are not objecting.  Isn't this a violation of rule 2.3 B. '...must be light in color'...??   Or should the referee just not say anything as I have observed?"

Answer: Gloves must be light in color to let the referee know when they are wet and need to be changed.  Referee should enforce the rule.  For more info on Gloves, see rule 2.3

This week's question:  "Where can I bounce it?"
The server thinks he can get a little extra on his serve by dropping the ball behind the short line and angling it forward to hit it.
    Can he/she do that?

Think you have the right call?  Submit your answers HERE.

Answers will be posted next week.

    Court Shorts Trivia...
Last  week's Trivia:  You have to start somewhere.  Can you name the only Player inducted into the Handball Hall of Fame that has won a "B" National Singles Title?

Answer:  Dave Dohman won the Collegiate National B Singles title for Lake Forest College in 1978.  Since then, Dohman has moved on to capture Open titles as well as gain Grand Master status.  Dohman's accomplishments were recognized this year as he was successfully nominated for induction into the Handball Hall of Fame.  Ceremony will take place at next year's National Three-Wall.

This week's question:  The NCAA introduced the Bowl Championship Series to help clear up the mess determining a National Champion in Collegiate Football.  Although many argue it's a flawed system, it has eliminated the possibility of schools sharing a "Co-National Title."  Believe it or not, we've had a tie in team points, resulting in Co-National Titles with our USHA National Collegiate Team Champions.  Can you name the year(s) and which schools were involved?
Think you're a Trivia King?  Submit your answers HERE. Those who answer correctly are entered in a monthly trivia drawing.
