USHA National Collegiate Tournament hosted by Texas A&M
University
College Station, Texas - Ricardo Diaz was given his
toughest test of the tournament when he faced DIT's Brian Carroll. After losing
the first game 21-18, Diaz was watching his opponent serve with an 18-16
advantage in the second game. Diaz responded by getting the side-out he needed,
which he serve out to force the tiebreaker. In the deciding game, Diaz raised
his intensity and noticed his opponent starting to tire.
"His shots were
starting to fall short, but earlier they were on a line." Diaz said.
With Diaz up 10-4, Carroll put together a mini two-point run, but
couldn't keep Diaz out of the service box. Diaz put a shot down the left side
glass that was out of Carroll's reach to seal the win.
Courtney Peixoto
repeated as singles champ with a tough win over Eimear Ni Fhalluin. This was Ni
Fhalluin's first loss on American soil, as she slammed in the Juniors in
December.
Peixoto came up just short in her attempt to slam when the
Lake Forest team of Lisa Jeziorney and Carly Stickles took the championship in
the tiebreaker, 17-21, 21-3, 11-6.
Lake Forest continued to roll in the
doubles, with Tyler Stevens and Billy O'Donnell defeating George Watson and
Eddie Morales of Missouri State, 21-9, 21-10.
The Foresters then went on
the win the B Doubles as Kevin Jarvis and Robert Burda defeated Niall Gordon and
Tommie McGrath, 16-21, 21-18, 11-3.
The win marked the first time that
one school has won all doubles divisions at the National Collegiates.
