53rd USHA National Collegiate Tournament - Final Results

Lake Forest swept the Men's, Women's and Combined Team Titles.

University of Minnesota - The University of Arizona's Courtney Peixoto slammed first winning her doubles match with Tina Apolinario over Lake Forest's team of Carly Stickles and Danielle White, 21-12, 21-16.

Peixoto then pulled out a tiebreaker win over Rochester's Samantha England, 17-21, 21-7, 11-6.

In an All-Irish Open Singles and Open Doubles Finals, Charlie Shanks (Queens-Belfast) defeated Joe McCann (Sligo IT) in the Men's Open Singles, 21-6, 21-13. McCann then teamed with Damien Martin to defeat Dublin IT's Brian Carroll and Cormac Smyth, 5, 12.

In team competition, Lake Forest swept the Men's, Women's and Combined Title for 2005. DIT was runner up in the Men's, and SMS was runner up in the Women's and Combined.

Hardin Simmons University clinched their second Division II team title in three years. The University of Minnesota finished second.

Mike Mehilos (Lake Forest) and Zach Arem (Kentucky) were awarded the John Sabo Scholarship.

Matt Berzins (Arizona), Joe McCann (Sligo IT), Jean Kasamoto (Pacific), and Veronika Libson (Texas A&M) were awarded the Collegiate Sportsmanship Awards. A special "thank you" goes to Matt Hiber and his staff at the University of Minnesota for running a spectacular event.

Saturday's Results

Charlie Shanks and Joe McCann will face-off in the first all Irish Open Collegiate Final

University of Minnesota - In the Men’s Open Singles, Ricardo Diaz (San Jose State University) held a 20-16 lead over Charlie Shanks (Queens University of Belfast) in the first game before Shanks dug in and ran off 5 points to win 21-20. Said Shanks, “I could tell he was pressing to get that last point. Instead of calling a time-out, I wanted to keep pressing him, but try to keep the ball out of his hands.” Shanks, energized by his dramatic game one win, cruised in the second to win his spot in the Men’s Final.

On the other side of the draw, Adam Bernhard (University of Texas) jumped to a 16-10 lead over Joe McCann (Sligo Institute of Technology), but McCann held Bernhard to 1 point making an offensive run to take the first game 21-17. McCann stepped up his play in the second to win 21-7. McCann will face Shanks in the first All-Irish Men's Open Collegiate Final.

University of Arizona’s Courtney Peixoto got closer to returning to the Women’s Open final with a two game win over Stoneybrook’s Alethia Mendez. Peixoto leads 16-11 after Mendez gained the serve.

Kareem Wilkerson of New York’s City Tech reached the finals of the Men’s A Singles in his first National Collegiate event. He’ll be facing University College of Dublin’s Pat Clerkin in the final.

Oklahoma University’s two brothers Matt and Mike Hinderman will be meeting in the final of the Men’s Challengers Singles.

The University of Minnesota hosts the USHA National Collegiate Awards Banquet at the Radisson in Minneapolis tonight. Team Championships and All-American Awards will be announced.

Friday's Results

Kelly Arunski of TAMU lobs a serve to Diane Luttrell of SMS in their Women's B match. Got Snow?  Unable to find a bag of ice, University of Florida's Morgan Stevens makes use of the local natural resource to ice down his sore elbow.

University of Minnesota - Tyler Stevens of Lake Forest College gave the No. 1 seed Joe McCann a scare in their Round of 16 match-up with a game one win at 21-16. The Irishman from Sligo Institute of Technology came back to take the second game 21-14 and cruise in the tiebreaker, 11-4.

The University of Arizona’s Courtney Peixoto will face Lake Forest’s Danielle White in the quarterfinals. Sharon Daly from the University Limerick upset No. 5 seed Shelly Pupillo of SMS in the round of sixteen play, 21-17, 21-10. All other top seeds in the Women’s Open singles advanced. Singles and Doubles play resumes on Saturday.

Thursday's Results

Southwestern's Kijun Hong shoots against Western Washington's Steve Samson in Contender's action The Collegiate Tournament brings plenty of school spirit as teammates cheer each other on.

With only 14 courts, Steve Soto and the crew from Minnesota kept all the matches running on time.

University of Minnesota - Singles play began for all players as matches started at 8:00 AM and finished at midnight. There were no major upsets as preliminary play finished.

Members from the Texas A&M team enter the Rec Center. The University of Minnesota's mascot greats collegiate handballers as they approach the University Rec Center.

University Rec Center Coaches make use of a squash court for the seeding meetings.

University of Minnesota - The University of Minnesota's Recreational Center will see continuous action as 265 players from 42 colleges will converge on the building's handball courts. Men's and Women's Doubles action began on Wednesday shortly after the initial coaches seeding meeting.
