2001 National Collegiate FINAL Results
February 22-25, 2001

Freshman Mehilos Slams at Her First National Collegiates

MINNEAPOLIS- Megan Mehilos of Lake Forest made head coach Mike Dau proud as she slammed winning the Women’s Open Singles and Doubles at the 2001 USHA National Collegiate held at the University of Minnesota.

Mehilos faced another freshman, Lynn Alesi (Texas A&M), in the final.

Mehilos used her powerful serves and the concept of percentage handball to defeat Alesi in two games, 21-13, 21-8. Mehilos kept Alesi on defense and was never out of control of the match.

It was an all Lake Forest Women’s Open Doubles final. Mehilos teamed with senior Erika Sove to defeat teammates, Samantha England and Leslie Boyle in two, 21-7, 21-16.

The third time was a charm for Sove, this was her third open doubles final in a row, and first time crowned as women’s open double national champion. Her parents, whom one is an USHA Boardmember, Tom Sove, were present and very proud.

Eoin Kennedy of Dublin City University (DCU), looked as sharp as ever as he won the Men’s Open championship with his 21-7, 21-4 win over Brad Alesi (Texas A&M) in the final.

“Brad’s very good, I could tell he was pumped up and ready to play,” said Kennedy, after winning his first collegiate championship. “In the second game he started favoring his right shoulder and I knew he was not 100%. I just went out there and played my game.”

Alesi was favoring his right shoulder and even started serving with his left hand in the second game.

“I have not played with my right hand in nine months,” said Alesi. “This weekend was the first time I used my right and I played a lot of handball this weekend. Next year is my senior year and I will be in shape and ready to play.”

In the Men’s Open Doubles, Bill Mehilos and Mike Munson of Lake Forest defeated Paul Gaffney and Dessie Keegan of Dublin Institute of Technology in two 21-8, 21-3.

Munson, a senior, won his second consecutive open doubles title. Last year he teamed with Mike Bargman.

There were family ties in the final matches on Sunday. Megan and Bill Mehilos and Lynn and Brad Alesi are both brother sister combos and teammates. All four of them grew up together outside of Chicago and are handball protÈgÈs of Don Quinlan at the Latoff YMCA.

Tournament director Matt Hiber and his staff at the department of recreation, did a fabulous job hosting the larges collegiates ever. The atmosphere of a collegiate championship on a campus such as the University of Minnesota was ideal. Our thanks to Hiber, the U of M for all their hard work.
